KOH SAMUI: The holiday island plans to open up to vaccinated foreign tourists from 1 July with the Samui Sealed Route model.

The tourism industry has set a Sealed Route where tourists can travel to beaches in Tham Rang in Angthong National Marine Park or experience wellness activities such as yoga, spa treatments and meditation. Previously, tourists have to stay in their rooms on the day of arrival and take a COVID-19 test on the second day, then they can leave their rooms and use other hotel facilities. From the fourth day, travellers can leave the hotel and on the seventh day another test is done. With a negative result, they can continue their travels on Koh Samui or to other destinations.

According to Ratchaporn Poolsawadee, president of the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, the vaccination campaign has gained momentum on the island. About 30 per cent, or 25,000 people, had already received two doses of the vaccine, he said, and there were very few reports of side effects. "We strongly believe that the vaccination process will be completed by June, which will be in time for the reopening schedule," Ratchaporn reported. Holidaymakers from Israel, Australia, Russia and Southeast Asian countries wanted to visit the island as soon as it was fully reopened for tourism, he said. Surat Thani province and Koh Samui have now had to tighten travel restrictions and disease control measures to contain the spread of the virus as 50 Covid 19 cases have been reported on Koh Samui.
